-Yoga at the Boy Scout Cabin (Wednesdays 5:45pm) will not meet for the next 4 weeks.  It is tentatively scheduled to start up again on Wednesday, May 11, at 5:45pm.

Good afternoon, yogis!

Unfortunately I need to take time off from teaching due to medical complications. I have had ongoing health issues for years and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia last week. I have many medical tests and scans coming up within the next month. The most important thing I can do for myself right now is to get rest as I figure out how to find balance with my health, my jobs, and teaching yoga. I'll admit I'm a workaholic; it's finally caught up with me and is taking a drastic toll on my health. I'm hoping to be an example to others dealing with chronic conditions by reminding you that it's okay to say no when you're running on empty, to take rest when you need it, make time for relaxation, and go to the doctor when your health is struggling. We can't fully help others unless we take care of ourselves in the first place.

To reiterate, I am not quitting my yoga instruction practice. I am simply taking some time off to rest and recharge. I will send out email updates in the future when classes and private instruction appointments are back on the schedule. Thank you for understanding!

Much love,

Private Yoga Instruction at Whitehead Wellness Center

The art of yoga has evolved into many different styles and disciplines over thousands of years. Contrary to popular belief, yoga is more than just “a workout”. It is a holistic, individualized approach to life and has many benefits. Incorporating movement with breath, increasing self awareness, and strengthening the connection between the mind and body are just a few of the many aspects of yoga.

Practicing yoga regularly can be a great compliment to the quality chiropractic care you’re already receiving. When practiced on a regular basis, yoga can:

  • Safely improve range of motion
  • Increase overall strength
  • Improve balance
  • Relieve chronic pain
  • Increase flexibility
  • Lower stress levels
  • Improve brain function
  • Improve lung capacity

In addition to many other movements and techniques, the physical practice of yoga incorporates all seven movements of the spine, as follows:

  • Flexion (curling in)
  • Extension (backbending)
  • Lateral flexion - Left (sidebending)
  • Lateral flexion - Right (sidebending)
  • Axial rotation - Left (twisting)
  • Axial rotation - Right (twisting)
  • Axial extension (lengthening)

There are hundreds of yoga poses each with multiple variations, and numerous modifications are available for beginners. Yoga poses can be practiced from these positions:

  • Standing
  • Seated (on the floor or a chair)
  • Supine (lying on the back, face up)
  • Prone (lying on the belly, face down)

  • Sara will guide you through a personalized 60 minute sequence during every visit, appropriate to your fitness level and range of motion. Each sequence will incorporate breathwork, relaxation techniques, and movement involving the entire body (not just the spine). Please communicate how you’re feeling and don’t hesitate to ask questions during the appointment.
  • Receive hands-on assists that ensure safe alignment and give you support in postures. Light massage techniques are used in certain poses to help relieve muscular tension and stress.
  • See photo below to view the space and typical setup.

  • Please arrive 15 minutes early for your first appointment. This will allow plenty of time to fill out necessary paperwork.
  • All poses are optional. If it hurts, don’t do it! Please let Sara know if you are experiencing pain and she will offer an alternative posture.
  • All you need to bring is yourself and a bottle of water. A yoga mat and props will be available to you at every appointment. If you already own a yoga mat, you are welcome to bring it.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement and stays in place when bending over.
  • Avoid eating a heavy meal right before an appointment. It’s best to let your food settle 1-2 hours prior to practicing to avoid indigestion.
  • Regular practice is necessary in order to notice long-term benefits.
  • Saying “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga” is like saying “I’m too tired to sleep”! Yoga can be practiced by anyone willing to give it a try, regardless of age, fitness level, flexibility, gender, and size.
